Performance evaluation of old, native chicken breeds and optimization of a software for breeding bookkeeping in Saxon poultry farming ("Sachsenhuhn")
For pedigree poultry, no current, reliable data on performance, functional traits as well as animal welfare indicators and product quality characteristics existed. Sachsenhuhn and Deutscher Zwerg-Langschan as endangered breeds were therefore tested in rearing and laying period under extensive free-range management, to evaluate their growth, slaughter and laying performance as well as their egg and meat quality in comparison with high performance hybrid hens. With the optimization of an existing, species-independent, open-source software for breeding groups (APIIS), among other things, the data already collected today should be used and evaluated more effectively.
The successful completion of the project is a significant milestone for the breeding base. For the first time, valid data on performance, animal welfare indicators and product quality for the two chicken breeds are available. With the help of the optimized software, there is now a freely available instrument for the digital documentation of studbook data.
