Project Title

Development and improvement of the production system for organic sugar beet

Project description

Lack of seasonal labor and weed control are currently the limiting factors in Bavarian organic sugar beet production. The project aims to demonstrate that the use of modern camera, software and sowing technology can significantly reduce the costs of the saisonal labor force. Indeed such systems, once implemented, have the potential to reduce manual labor up to 75%. Thereby the local organic sugar beet production will become more competitive than organic cane sugar from overseas and the Bavarian organic sugar beet production could be greatly expanded. Further the possibility to transfer this technology system to other row crops is provided.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

To reduce the manual labor effort, attempts have been made in recent years to use selective hoes from vegetable production in organic sugarbeet cultivation. Due to the close plant spacing in the row and the small advance of the crop over the weed, the damage was greater than the gain from labor savings. Main reasons were both in plant detection and tool design. Based on previous work this project used classical image processing algorithms to develop approaches for detection of plant center. Single plant detection achieved detection rates of 50% to 98% for different plant stages and exposure scenarios. Further by sowing the plants in a triangular formation, very good results were also achieved even under difficult operating conditions with a high degree of weed coverage. By linking the information from the sowing technique and image processing, it has been possible to develop an extremely robust and error-proof system for controlling weeds in organic sugarbeet cultivation.
