Creation of conservation headland in grassland
In Hessian grassland, there is a conflict between preserving biodiversity and increasing agricultural productivity. The intensification of cultivation reduces the diversity of herb species as a fodder base and impairs ecosystem services. The project aims to resolve this conflict of objectives by creating small-scale conservation strips (5% area). In the short term, this enables process protection on a small area and, in the long term, the sustainable and comprehensive restoration of valuable grassland communities. The overall aim is to integrate the process into the Hessian agri-environmental support scheme, to optimise existing support modules and to quantify biodiversity effects. To this end, conservation strips are being established in grassland and on farms. The influence of the strips on the biodiversity of grasses, herbs and insects will also be analysed. Various mowing techniques are being trialled to determine the best way to increase biodiversity and yield.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
