Miscanthus strip cultivation-Integration of perennial Miscanthus strips on arable land
Increasing competition for arable land requires forms of land utilisation that make production processes land-efficient and as climate-neutral as possible. The project is therefore trialling the use of Miscanthus in strip cultivation and pursuing the integration of perennial Miscanthus strips into arable farming systems in Hesse. The evergreen plants offer favourable conditions such as high drought resistance and high growth rates with high biomass and low fertiliser requirements. Data is being collected and modelled on the trial sites on three farms in Hesse in order to record important values for soil health and biodiversity and to investigate the effects on yield development and neighbouring arable land. The results should reveal strategies for efficiently and effectively integrating sustainable biomass production into proven crop rotations and opening up potential regional sales markets for Miscanthus products.
