Sustainable reduction of mistle affection in traditional orchards - strategy development for traditional orchards in Baden-Württemberg

Project description

Many traditional Orchard in Baden-Württemberg suffer from heavy affection with mistle (Viscum album). Very often the affection Starts from "superspreaders", i.e. strongly affected trees, from where birds spread the seed to the next tree. This fact influences the vitality of the trees and endangers nature Conservation targets being
complied by traditional orchards.
This project aims to define the factors favoring the spread and to find out the conditions for the different velocities of the spread. The analyse will be the basis for measures to be taken for a significant an  sustainable reduction of mistle affection.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

• to define the factors favoring the spread and to find out the conditions favoring an reducing the velocity of the affection
• development of measures to be taken for a significant and sustainable reduction of mistle affection in the model regions
• development of general recommendations for measures
• recommendations for developing synergies between fruit production and management of mistle affection (opömized tree maintenance)
